Do you really think a SPN revival would work without both Sam and Dean? (Asking non-aggressively. Tone is hard to convey in text.). We have seen every spin-off concept without them both fail so far.

I’m not saying a good story couldn’t be told with Dean II focus, but the magic behind SPN was always Jared and Jensen together. Otherwise, it’s just another found family, supernatural story (and there are a few). It was Sam and Dean’s unhinged codependency and J2’s chemistry that made the OG SPN so compelling.

Personally, at least, I don’t think I’d care about a story that didn’t have both brothers.

I wish Jared (and Jensen) wouldn’t hype a revival if there isn’t any real intention behind it. Surly people are showing up at cons without dangling the carrot, and if no revival happens they will dry up eventually. They already are. Yo an extent. Teasing a revival is not “what I want to hear” if it isn’t actually intended.

Ugh. I hate Hollywood BS. Even the nice actors, why say they care, are lying to you.

I should have clarified that the revival ideally be a mix of Dean II stories and Sam and Dean stories set between 15x19 and 15x20. Fans and Jared like to think there was 5 years between those two episodes and as long as J2 maintain their weights, they can pull it off.  With Jack remaking heaven and keeping the angels away from earth and Rowena keeping demons away from the Winchesters, the brothers’ hunts return to the more simple days of monster hunting.  My personal favorite fanfic idea is Sam’s adult hunter grandchildren (played by Colin Ford and Brock Kelly) time travel back to 2020 to search for a valuable artifact, only to run into Sam and Dean one month before 15x20.  The grandchildren of course cannot tell Sam and Dean who they really are as Sam and Dean help them find the artifact.  As the grandchildren spend more time with Sam and Dean, they come to really like Dean and want to warn him of his impending death.  But then they realized that if Dean lives, Sam won’t leave hunting, won’t meet their grandmother, and they will cease to exist.

This will be the length of limited series as there's no 20+ episodes anymore and instead release 10 episodes for couple of seasons.

Jared and Jensen know that WB is going to attempt a revival or spinoff sooner or later, might as well keep their names attached to it because you never know if the next WB executive may try to make their mark by saying Sam and Dean who? Jared in particular doesn't want the inevitable spinoff or reboot or revival to dilute the Supernatural brand. Think of George Takei's public complaints that every new Star Trek spinoff was diluting the OG brand.

Driver Profiles: Liam Lawson

Hello, this is part of a series where I focus on one driver on the current (as of Oct 2024) grid and give an overview over their career and driving styles. I will be going in championship points order. Enjoy!

Driving Style: Lawson is noted as a particularly adaptive driver. He seems to mesh well with many different cars, series, and styles. He is noted for his adaptability due to the fact that he regularly enters new series and shows good results quickly. Beyond that he is an assertive driver, but not as aggressive and reckless as some rookies can be. However, this lower amount of aggression meant he was less forceful in overtaking situations. Also his general lack of experience in an F1 car is a downside.

History:

Lawson was born to a relatively middle-class family, with a father who had a passion for Motorsport racing. This got Lawson involved from a very young age, and he started karting professionally at age 6. He had a very successful karting career, winning his first national title in 2012 when he won the Cadet class of the NZ CIK Championship. In 2013 he won his second national title in Junior Restricted and also finished runner-up in the NZ Schools Championship. 2014 he added two more national karting titles, winning Junior Restricted in both the NZ Sprint Championship and NZ Schools.

2015 he made his single-seater debut in the Formula First Manfield Winter Series taking a win and ten podiums to finish 2nd in the standings that year.overall. A few months later he took part in the NZ Formula First championship, taking a win and three podiums, getting 6th in the standings and winning Rookie of the Year. The following year, Lawson graduated to the NZ F1600 Championship Series where he dominated, claiming fourteen of the fifteen victories on offer to become the youngest champion in not just the series' history, but the youngest ever Formula Ford champion in world at the time.

In 2017, Lawson moved up to the Australian F4 championship, taking five wins to finish 2nd in his rookie season. 2018 Lawson remained at Formula 4 level, moving across to contest the ADAC Formula 4 championship with Van Amersfoort Racing (home to many future F1 drivers) and won three times, which saw him claim his second consecutive F4 runner up position.

Lawson took part in the Toyota Racing Series for the 2019 season and had a fantastic season. Lawson dominated on debut at Highlands, taking two races wins. He won three more times across the season along with multiple podium finished, and secured the title before the season was even over. He would take part in many other series over the next couple of years.

He competed in F3, but had middling results, is highest standings finish being 3rd in 2020. He moved on to F2 in 2021, where he had another middling season. He did achieve one win and three podiums, but finished 9th in the standings. He also competed in DTM during that year, having a very tight season and finishing 2nd in the standings. 2022 F2 was a much better year, as he had multiple race wins and podiums. He finished 3rd in the season, and had dropped from 2nd due to some unfortunate results in the latter half of the season.

2023 Lawson took part in Super Formula, showing immediate pace and skill, and claimed three wins, multiple podiums, and many high-points finishes. He unfortunately finished 2nd in the standings, and did not return to Super Formula in 2024. During the 2023 year, Lawson also subbed in for an Injured Daniel Riccardo on the AlphaTauri team. He had held a connection to F1 for many years, joining the Red Bull Junior Team in 2019, and had served as their reserve driver for both AlphaTauri and Red Bull starting 2022. His time with AlphaTauri was decent. he did only score points once, but he also did finish higher than his teammate during this time.

Once Riccardo returned, Lawson was kept as a reserve driver, a role he held until he was promoted up to the VCARB (AlphaTauri) seat for the remainder of the 2024 season, replacing Daniel Riccardo permanently. His first race as an official F1 driver is set to be the COTA GP. As of right now he does not have a seat for the 2025 season.

Major Races (including non F1):

2021 DTM Championship Norisring Finale - A race that showed off his great skill and pace, it was marred by a controversial scrape with Kevin van der Linde, his title rival. Mid-race, van der Linde made contact with Lawson and forced him into the gravel, which ultimately lost Lawson the title.

2021 F2 Monaco Sprint - He won this race with a stellar drive, showing his high handling skills and cool head around a very complex circuit. This helped him attract serious F1 attention.

2023 Singapore GP - His first F1 points every score, Lawson showed remarkable perseverance in one of the most physically demanding races of the season. Only his third race in F1, he showed great composure and fantastic race craft.

2023 Super Formula Fuji - His time in SF was all around positive, and at Fuji he dominated the track. He showcased great control in mixed conditions and showed he could handle a high-downforce car, important in F1.

Alright, that is the last one. I might do a series of profiles on some F1 legends (Senna, Prost, Hill, Lauda, Schumacher, Fangio, etc) so keep an eye out for that.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

They don’t make movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom anymore - for multiple reasons. Certain aspects of this film will take modern movie-goers aback. You can focus on the dubious cultural depictions, violence and gross-out humor or you can divert your attention to what works: the never-ending tension, action scenes & set pieces, cinematography and the ever-charismatic lead.

In this prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) narrowly escapes from crime boss Lao Che (Roy Chiao) with his eleven-year-old sidekick Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) and nightclub singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw). Unfortunately, they soon find themselves stranded in northern India, where many children have gone missing and a sacred stone - one of the five fabled Shankara stones - has been stolen. Their quest to unravel the mystery brings our heroes to an ancient Thuggee cult who practice dark magic and ritualistic human sacrifices.

In a way, this picture is much lighter than Raiders. We’re not dealing with Nazis. Indy and his little buddy are going up against India’s equivalent of devil-worshippers but the villains are firmly planted in the realm of fantasy. There are many jokes as the boys playfully bicker and roll their eyes at Willie, who has no business being on this adventure but wound up alongside them. Over and over, she’s screaming at the bugs, skeletons, traps and dangers they encounter. The duo would be much better off without the dumb blonde… but abandoning her would be irresponsible. She’s nothing like Karen Allen's Marion and the film makes that clear. If Willie's going to complain about being away from the city, let's give her a real reason to - which means lots and lots of ewwww moments. This is where people might raise an eyebrow. There’s a famous banquet scene where the most stomach-churning foods are served. You may interpret it as a) an implication that all Indians are barbarians that eat eyeballs and snakes (although the good villagers we meet early-on definitely do not) b) an elaborate gag that may or may not resonate with you (humor is subjective, after all) or c) hints that something at this palace is amiss…

Despite the initial tone, this is an intense movie. There are torture and grisly human sacrifices, children are kidnapped/enslaved, people are explicitly killed - often in gruesome manners. The tone is far too intense to be rated PG but it was. The PG-13 rating was only introduced after the MPAA got similar complaints from Gremlins just one month later.

This film isn't as mature as its "successor" and it doesn't feel as polished either, though the filmmaking is still excellent. Once Indy and the gang realize the danger they've stumbled upon, the tension never lets up. Every escape is merely a brief reprieve. A new peril rolls around the next corner, ready to flatten them. It's fast-paced and exciting. Along the way, you also get excellent cinematography and camerawork. The shots which contrast Short Round to his big buddy are terrific. Through quick cuts and parallel actions, the camera says more than words ever could. It's a roller-coaster ride - sometimes literally. You'll be left breathless and maybe even overwhelmed. Is the movie for kids? maybe, maybe not. It's somewhere in between.

Often violent & gruesome and lacking some of the sophistication of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a disappointment... but only for this franchise. As a film on its own, or as a "first entry" in a series, it would make you go "wow!" Dated elements aside, it's exciting, memorable and fun. (On Blu-ray, May 22, 2020)

It's been one week since you all started looking at me

I'd like to link these first three headlines together and reflect a little after my first week on the job as Detroit's favorite unofficial headline reviewer. There are three constants for The Detroit News, and that's updates on the local sports teams, updates on the movements of the Big 3, and genuine news items. I don't mean to dismiss America's first (and second, and once hockey season starts, third) favorite pastimes, but I don't find urgency or import in the decisions of or game results for Detroit's teams. Alas, I have forced myself to report them, and so I shall.

The auto industry updates are a bit more complex, given the genuine importance to a lot of people in the area. Hell, I find myself at Ford's many plants from time to time. I can't discount the value of these news items, but I can't promise to have nuanced or interesting opinions on them either. Maybe as time goes on, I'll leave them out of these updates, but as it stands I feel as though I'd be doing a disservice to this project not to write the headlines out and provide my (however uninformed) color commentary.

5:55 p.m. EDT: "Prosecutor won't charge five people arrested in Israel-Hamas protest at Wayne State"

Wow, this is an incredibly disingenuous headline! Calling the protests for Palestinian liberation "Israel-Hamas protest[s]" is actually insane, I don't even know where to begin. I'd like to apologize if my usual eloquence deserts me for this segment, but I just can't pretend to focus on flowery prose when this is how a newspaper frames these events. There's a certain level of tone-deafness one must operate under to link Hamas at all to these protests in Detroit (adjacent to Dearborn, with its massive Arab-American population), and I'm shocked an editor let this pass unchecked. People calling for the end to a genocide that is actively killing their relatives or brothers and sisters in faith (or even their brothers and sisters in the human race, if we can be for real about this) has nothing to do with a foreign terrorist group. It would be like those protesting police brutality in Minneapolis in 2020 being labeled as "Police-Thug protest[ers]." It wouldn't be done there, and it shouldn't be done here.

6:37 p.m. EDT: "Audit: DTE, Consumers electricity outage durations 'worse than average' among utilities"

To quote one of my close friends: "I'm afraid of the rain, because every time the wind sneezes on my house, the power goes out." I wish the electricity in this area worked, but much like wishing not to be in a swamp, I fear there's nothing to be done. (I mean, there is, but I don't have the power to change it, so I shall stick my head in the proverbial sand.)

On a personal note:

I feel the burnout setting in. I, for the first time this semester, didn't turn in an assignment. I could make a lame excuse about a migraine, but I really just didn't want to watch a movie whose accompanying assignment is only worth 0.67% of my final grade. I'll try my best not to repeat the pattern this week, but only time will tell. The semester's not even half over.

ed. note: please excuse my use of the word "thug" above. I'm cognizant of the fact that I as a white person must be careful when bandying that word (and those like it) about, but another more apt comparison didn't come to hand quickly enough. I try not to spend more than 15 minutes writing these, but understand that I spent 3-4 of those agonizing on whether I could use a less inflammatory word. My dad wants me to buy a new car, but honestly, I've owned 3 cars, all purchased new. I have paid off ONE before it died a hideous and gruesome death.

2007 Pontiac G5 - got rear-ended like 5 times, I rear-ended someone, about a year after warranty expiry, the heating/cooling system died and was blowing hot air. IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER.

2015 Ford Focus - I think it was possessed. Or at least sentient and FUCKING PISSED it was a Ford. Ate 4 transmissions in an attempt to end its existence. The last time Ford kept it for 10 months and failed to replace the transmission while I kept making payments. They gave me a rental...for 30 days. FORD SUCKS.

2020 Hyundai Elantra - So, heed this warning: THEIR WIRING HARNESSES ARE MADE OF A SOY-BASED COMPOSITE THAT ATTRACTS RODENTS. Vehicle was 3 years old and at risk of bursting into flames. Not a warranty issue, so says the shitheads at Hyundai. Would have been $20k without insurance which....should have totaled the fucker out. Also had the issue where it could be stolen with a USB drive...even after the fix. Lived only to get t-boned at 55 MPH. Deceased. FUCK HYUNDAI.

Canadian armoured vehicle manufacturer Roshel announced that it had delivered the 1,000th Senator to the defenders of Ukraine. This is a great big armoured vehicle, which can take many different roles on the Ukrainian frontlines. Ukrainian soldiers have many good things to say about the Senator and it actually has many interesting features.

Ukraine is being helped by so many different countries. It is great – Ukraine is in a desperate need of military aid. However, this does result in a huge number of different vehicles that the defenders of Ukraine need to take advantage of and maintain. Some of them are quite rare and exotic.

The Roshel Senator would seem like such a vehicle, because it is from Canada and before the war in Ukraine was used only by Canada itself and NASA (they used them to defend astronauts before the 2020 Crew Dragon Demo-2 test flight).

However, the Roshel Senator is actually not that strange. It is based on a Ford F-550 chassis and has a Ford 6.7 litre Power Stroke diesel engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This means that spare parts for these vehicles are readily available pretty much everywhere in the world.

Also, because it’s based on a civilian platform, the Senator is bizarrely comfortable. It even has air conditioning and sound insulation. And while it weighs around 8 tonnes, it is actually quite good off-road, because of all that Ford expertise that was incorporated into this chassis.

The Senator has 250 kW of power and 750 Nm of torque. Its top speed depends on the weight, but you can expect it to go as fast as 120 km/h. This is quite impressive for an armoured vehicle, which serves as an armoured personnel carrier. 10 passengers and 2 crew members will find space inside of the Senator and it can be armed with a machine gun.

The Senator has a good level of protection against lighter charges and bullets. Its original purpose was peacekeeping and law enforcement activities so protection from small arms fire was the main focus of its designers. However, it can be configured as an armoured personnel carrier or an infantry mobility vehicle and that is what it does in Ukraine.

Because it is based on a ubiquitous Ford platform, the Roshel Senator can be made quite quickly. Just 8 Senators were shipped to Ukraine in 2022 and the 1,000th was delivered this December. Of course, naturally, several of them were lost in the Ukrainian defence effort. However, the defenders of Ukraine are happy with these machines, because they are easy to maintain, quick and easy to use.
